Adult Bible Study at St. Bartholomew
Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study — 9:00 am
Every Sunday morning at 9:00 am, our rector The Rev. Dr. Bob Merrill or our associate rector The Rev. Dr. Lee Ligon-Borden leads an adult Bible study session that focuses on a specific reading from Scripture.
As an Episcopal Priest who also is an engineer with a doctorate in Chemical Engineering and has lived and traveled around the world, Fr. Bob brings a wealth of knowledge concerning the social, political, and historical events recorded in the Bible and how they can be applied to our lives today. An Episcopal priest, a medical writer/editor, and a Visiting Professor with a doctorate in modern British Literature, Mtr. Lee has a strong background in theology and exegesis of scripture and examines the spiritual perspectives of the texts. Both Fr. Bob and Mtr. Lee are graduates of the Iona School of Ministry and were ordained in The Episcopal Diocese of Texas.
Most recently, we completed the Gospel of John. The summer study is exploring the scriptural basis for the polity and various traditions of The Episcopal Church. The study is designed to inform newcomers to the Episcopal Church, as well as remind “cradle Episcopalians,” of our rich heritage and of the significant role that Scripture plays in our corporate worship and individual lives.
Friday Afternoon Adult Bible Study — 1:00 – 2:30 pm
On Friday afternoons at 1:00 pm, Mtr. Lee leads an interdenominational adult Bible study that focuses on a particular book of Scripture or various topics. Most recently, we have looked at the typology of Christ in the Old Testament and I John. This summer, we are doing some “open forums” to allow people to bring their questions and discuss difficult passages. In the fall of 2010, Mtr. Lee will begin a series on Revelation. Participants are from different denominations in the Hempstead area, as well as from St. Bartholomew. “Early birds” bring sack lunches and meet in the parish hall for lunch and conversation at 12:00. All are welcome, regardless of denomination or background.
Join the Conversations
In accordance with our Episcopal tradition, we welcome all perspectives into the conversation and occasionally respectfully “agree to disagree.” We move slowly through the texts by design to allow those with questions to pose them and to explore any topic raised during the conversation through to its conclusion. Except for short series, such as we are doing this summer, we move slowly and carefully through the texts rather than attempting to meet calendar dates.
Participants have a very broad range of Bible expertise, so whether you have a seminary degree, have never opened a Bible before, or fall somewhere between, we invite you to come and share your knowledge or pose your questions. We’d love to see you on Sunday mornings at 9:00 and/or on Friday afternoons at 1:00. Bring your Bible or just show up.
